First, the Truth About Card Value
Most of the Pokémon cards you own are worth very little: on TCGplayer, the world's largest trading-card marketplace, "bulk" cards mostly trade for a few cents to a few dollars: even if a few valuable exceptions occasionally hide among thousands. Common and Uncommon cards, and most non-chase "Rares", stay in that range even in excellent condition. What actually carries real value: (1) vintage cards from the WOTC era (1999–2003), especially holo rares and 1st editions; (2) a card graded Gem Mint 10 by a recognized grading company: especially a low-population vintage card graded that high; (3) sealed, unopened product (booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes) from discontinued sets; (4) rare Japanese prints or Special Illustration Rares of sought-after cards. To put both extremes in the same picture: a Pikachu Illustrator card graded PSA 10 sold at auction for $16.49 million, the all-time record for any trading card, according to Guinness World Records; a 1999 Shadowless Charizard graded PSA 10 sold for $311,800, according to Forbes. These are international figures, and they represent an extreme, exceptionally rare edge of the market: not a typical vintage card, and certainly not a modern one.
The Most Expensive Card in the World, and What It Sold For
The world record changed hands in February 2026. A PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator sold at Goldin Auctions on 16 February 2026 for $16,492,000. Bidding ran 41 days and drew 97 bids: the hammer landed at $13.3 million and the rest is buyer premium. Guinness World Records certified it as a double record, the most expensive Pokémon card sold at auction and the most expensive trading card sold at auction in any category. The seller was Logan Paul, who had bought the same card privately in 2021 for $5.275 million, itself a private-sale record at the time. What makes this card exceptional is not that it is relatively rare but that it barely exists: 39 copies were printed, awarded as prizes in three CoroCoro magazine illustration contests in Japan between 1997 and 1998, and exactly one of them holds a PSA 10. Why this matters if you have cards at home: this is precisely the card that makes people overestimate what is in their drawer. Cards that sell for millions are one-off items with documented provenance and a perfect grade, not rare cards from a set that went on general sale. A rare card from an ordinary set is in an entirely different order of magnitude. The sections below explain how to reach a realistic number for your own card.
What Determines Value: Rarity, Set & Edition
Rarity: the symbol on a card indicates how often it appears in a pack. "Holo" (Holo Rare), only the illustration box is holographic foil, the rest of the card is matte; this is the standard "Rare" slot in a pack. "Reverse Holo", the whole card is foil except the art box; guaranteed in every modern pack, so less rare than a straight Holo. "Full Art", the artwork covers the entire card with no border; introduced in the Black & White era. "Secret Rare", the card's collector number is higher than the set's advertised card count (e.g. card 201 in a 200-card set), almost always pricier than an Ultra Rare. Set and edition: the basis for nearly every record-priced Pokémon card is a vintage 1999 WOTC-era Base Set card, specifically "1st Edition" (with a black stamp) and "Shadowless" (an early print run with no drop-shadow around the art box). Modern cards almost never reach these prices, even in a perfect grade, because they were printed in far larger numbers.
Card Condition: TCGplayer's Condition Scale
TCGplayer, the leading trading-card marketplace, defines five official condition tiers for ungraded cards: Near Mint (NM), no imperfections, or a few minimal ones only; crisp corners and clean edges. Lightly Played (LP), minor edge wear, scuffs, or light scratches; no structural issues. Moderately Played (MP), edge wear, surface wear, scratching or scuffing, bends with creases, or a moderate combination of these. Heavily Played (HP), major wear, multiple moderate imperfections plus creasing and whitening, but the card must still authenticate and not be structurally damaged. Damaged, beyond HP: major border wear, scratching, bends, tears, splitting, or a foreign substance (food or liquid) that compromises structural integrity. Each step down reduces resale value, often steeply. There is no single official percentage-discount table (none exists), and the most reliable comparison is between active listings of the same card in different conditions on TCGplayer itself.
How to Get an Actual Price: Scanner Apps and Market Prices
The fastest way to put a number on a card in your hand is a collector app that scans it: point the camera at the card, the app identifies it and shows its market price. Our recommendation: the official TCGplayer app, free, iOS and Android, available on the Israeli App Store, and wired directly to prices on the world's largest trading-card marketplace. An alternative: Dragon Shield's Poké TCG Scanner (free with in-app purchases, available in Israel), which scans cards in any print language: useful for Japanese cards, and shows prices from both TCGplayer and Europe's Cardmarket; note it updates on a slower cycle. Three caveats for reading the number correctly: 1. The scanner identifies the card, it does not check that it's genuine. No scanner app detects counterfeits, and a fake that copies a real card scans normally (see our fakes guide). And when the same artwork was printed in several sets, the scanner can match the wrong set: verify against the collector number and set symbol in the corner. 2. The price shown is an international market price (US or Europe), usually for a Near Mint copy. A card in worse condition is worth less, sometimes much less (see the condition scale above). 3. An international price is not an Israeli price: selling locally to a smaller market usually fetches less, and buying from abroad adds shipping and taxes. Use the app's price as a reference point, and price against what comparable cards actually sell for on the venue where you're selling. Without an app: search the card on the TCGplayer website itself, or on eBay filtered to "Sold items": completed-sale prices are more reliable than asking prices on open listings.
Grading Cards from Israel: PSA, CGC and the Costs
How much does it cost to grade a Pokémon card? The short answer, as of September 2026: from Israel, via the Israeli collection service MA Collectables: ₪260 or ₪320 per card, the only two PSA tiers open right now; shipping directly to PSA in the US: from $59.99 per card plus shipping and insurance; and to CGC: from $17 per card on the Bulk tier (25-card minimum). Now the details. What grading is: a process where a third-party company, PSA, CGC and others: authenticates that a card is genuine and unaltered, assesses its condition on a 1–10 scale, and seals it in a tamper-evident plastic holder ("slab") with the grade printed on the label. PSA pricing (US, by the card's max insured value; re-verified against psacard.com in September 2026): the cheaper Value tiers (Value Bulk and Value) are still paused, as they have been since June 2, 2026, when the backlog reached roughly 14 million cards. The current ladder: the cheapest tier you can order is Standard, at $59.99 per card, for cards worth up to $1,000, with a turnaround of about 90 to 100 business days; Priority costs $79.99 (up to $1,500, about 70 to 80 business days); Express $199 (up to $2,500); Super Express $349 (up to $5,000); Premier $599 (up to $10,000). Above that the price keeps rising with value: $999, $1,999, $2,999, $4,999, and $9,999+ by formula (for example: a card worth $425,000 costs $13,191 to grade). Tier availability changes with the backlog, check psacard.com before planning a submission. CGC pricing (US, verified against the company's site in September 2026, turnaround in working days): Bulk (25-card minimum), up to $500/card, $17/card, about 150 days; Economy: up to $1,000, $20/card, about 90 days; Standard: up to $3,000, $55/card, about 10 days; Express: up to $10,000, $100/card, about 5 days; WalkThrough: up to $100,000, $300/card, about 2 days; Unlimited Value: no cap, $300 plus 1% of fair market value, about 2 days. Membership discounts: Associate/Premium members get 10% off, Elite members get 20% off. Grading from Israel, in shekels: you don't need to ship directly to the US. MA Collectables is an Israel-based company that collects cards locally and submits them to PSA on your behalf. NIS pricing (verified against their site in September 2026): most tiers are currently marked unavailable, including the discounted game-card tier, sealed packs and game coins. Two are open: Standard, ₪260 per card (about 90 business days, for cards worth up to $1,000 after grading), and VIP Express, ₪320 (about 70 business days, up to $1,500). There is a discount from 10 cards up, and site registration is required. The site also lists CGC, BGS and SGC tiers: every CGC and SGC tier is unavailable right now, and BGS has a Super Express tier open at ₪360. When grading isn't worth it: the math is simple, if a card's raw (ungraded) value is below the grading fee plus shipping and insurance, grading it is a near-guaranteed loss, unless there's a good chance it grades Gem Mint 10 and the graded price materially exceeds both the fee and the raw value. Bulk cards and most non-chase modern cards are almost never worth grading individually.
Spotting Counterfeit Cards
Counterfeits are especially common among expensive vintage and rare cards, so it pays to know the warning signs. Red flags: washed-out or dull colors and fonts that look slightly off from the real thing, a card that feels too light, too thin, or has the wrong texture (the "feel test"), and a price meaningfully below what a comparable genuine card actually sells for: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For expensive cards, it's safer to buy one that's already graded (in a slab) or from a reputable shop, rather than from an anonymous listing at a suspicious price.
In Israel: How to Grade, and Where to Buy & Sell
There is no official Hebrew-language Pokémon TCG print run. The Pokémon Company's official print languages are English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Thai, and Indonesian: Israeli retailers mostly sell English, Japanese and Korean stock, never "Hebrew" cards. Grading from Israel: you don't need to ship directly to PSA in the US, the full tier-by-tier NIS pricing (MA Collectables) is in the "Grading Cards from Israel: PSA, CGC and the Costs" section above. Where to buy and sell in Israel: PokéZone (Tel Aviv), a dedicated Pokémon card and merchandise shop, singles and sealed product. How to Sell Pokémon Cards
1. Sort before you price. Scan every holo, vintage or special illustration card in the app and set them apart from the pile. Do not price common cards one by one: sell them as a lot, with the count stated. 2. Price by what sold, not by what is asked. The app price is an international starting point for a Near Mint copy. Check eBay with the "Sold items" filter too, adjust down for the card's real condition (see the condition scale above), and remember that the smaller Israeli market usually pays less. 3. Photograph what a buyer wants to see. Front and back, in daylight and without flash, plus close-ups of corners and edges, because that is where condition is decided. For a graded card, also photograph the label with its certification number, which the buyer can look up on the grading company's site. 4. Describe it honestly. Card name, set and card number, print language, and condition in the scale's terms (NM, LP and so on). A flaw you hide comes back as a dispute. 5. Choose where. A single valuable card: the shops and marketplaces in the previous section, or collector groups. A lot of common cards: one listing, with the count and the sets. You can also post it with us for free, via the link at the end of this guide. 6. Hand over safely. In person, somewhere public; by post, only with tracking and only after payment has cleared. Ship a valuable card in a sleeve inside a rigid holder, never in a plain envelope.
